Spellcard Test Bed Empty
PostSubject: Spellcard Test Bed   Spellcard Test Bed EmptyThu Jan 31, 2013 10:17 pm

This thread is for testing some ideas used in the card magic system suggested by Scarlet Other.

-Configurations-

The Eye of Madness (1/5)
Card Count: 4

Description: The design you found initially appears to be oddly simple, no more complex than a typical training array for novices. However, upon closer inspection, patterns of incomprehensible shifting symbols fade in and out all along the spell structure; on occasion, you catch glimpses of what may be an underlying pattern to the strange glyphs, but it it is quickly lost beneath the swirling chaos. This configuration feels powerful, but extremely unstable.

Properties:
*Pierce Innate
*+1 Distance
*+1 Duration
*+2 Speed
*+2 Charge

*Edge Forbidden
*Force Forbidden
*-2 Multi
*Animate Forbidden
*+1 Component (Special - Arcane Trigger)
*Special: Backlash Chance 25%

Synergies:
*All synergies do stack.
*The Builder: Backlash chance is reduced by 10%.
*The Moon: Spell cooldown is reduced by two posts.

*Balance: Backlash chance and damage are increased by 5%.

Structure:
Code:
        +++++
      +++++
    +++++

  +++++++  +++++++  (-+++++++  +++++++  +++++++  +++++++-)
  +++++++  +++++++  (-+++++++  +++++++  +++++++  +++++++-)

    +++++
      +++++
        +++++

Special Component: Arcane Trigger
*Description: This strange device is flat and disc-shaped. Made of an unknown silvery-white metal and etched with arcane symbols that seem to shift under the light, its only moving part appears to be a large red button that seems to give way unusually easily. The outer shell appears to be seamless and offers no way of accessing the item's inner workings.
*Uses: Unlimited
*Price: ? (Not Appraised)
*Rarity: Extremely Rare
*Effect: Required component when using the "Eye of Madness" configuration.

Item: Tattered Design Book (1/5)
*Description: This stained, ragged engineer's notebook is missing most of its pages, but the first section remains mostly intact. Many of the pages are covered in the illegible scribbles of a madman, but one page in particular contains what appears to be a diagram for a spell configuration. The notes scribbled in the margins indicate that it is incomplete, but should - just barely - be usable. One comment stands out from the rest: "They called me mad! Mad! The fools!"
*Price: ? (Not Appraised)
*Rarity: Extremely Rare
*Effect: Teaches the "Eye of Madness, Mk. 1" configuration.

Yes, it's implied that those other crappy ASCII cards are upgrades obtained by finding more loot... and yes, this is most certainly a joke entry.

Whew. That's a relief. Cause I didn't understand a single word. No seriously. After reading for a few seconds all the words started to look like Japanese kanji as I went into a daze. I then regained my mind when I saw that sentence. I thought I was a goner there.

そうですか。私はあなたが話しているかわからない。済みません。「Sou desu ka? Watashi wa anata ga hanashite iru ka wakaranai. Sumimasen.」

Trolling

(Actually, the mechanics are completely serious. The item itself is the parody.)

Oh, fine. Simple, then.

-Magic needs cards.
-Different cards, different magic.
--Like fireballs, walls, and lasers.
-Test idea: Patterns.
-Patterns=bonuses=more magic.
-More magic=good.

Also death ray jokes because puns.

Okay. I think I understa- Oops, nope, there it goes. Darn, almost had it.

Anyway this method seems like it would confuse too many people and even though I only represent the stupid people, there are a lot of stupid people in this world. Since we still don't have many members and finding it difficult to get this site off the ground, I think a more simpler method would be wiser. After all we want this place to be open to all kinds of people right?

Oh, for fuck's sake.

Right.
1) Magic=made of little puzzly bits.
2) Put little puzzly bits together=things die.
3) Sometimes you get instructions so you can do 2) better, making things die in cooler ways.

I swear that's almost the whole ultra-basic outline in three steps. Two if the whole pattern thing isn't included.

Also, I'm really not too keen on the all kinds of people bit, because that includes the asshats who will insist on roleplaying their porn in public even if it gets us impaled on the ban-stick, the people who don't know how to spell the word "I", and the ones who swear up and down that yes, the admins love them enough to allow them to submit the Sword of Instant Winning as their starter weapon DON'T YOU DARE INSULT MY SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE.

TL;DR the rules seriously aren't that hard, it's not as if we're asking you to read five D&D saucebooks and recite passages from memory, and no, I don't actually want literally anyone strolling in here.

Slightly less tl;dr seriously, just how simple do you want it? There really aren't that many alternatives beyond not having a system and just having everyone do whatever they want under basic "no porn in the forums" type rules. For members that's just dandy, but for staff it's like eating a bag of rusted nails. Dipped in burning tar and acid. With your eyes.

Why the alternate colors, what's going on here.

The builder?
There is no cooldown.
Whats the backlash about?

Why the oh so unique trigger? Card formations are to be used to trigger effects.

Overall, I'm not seeing any detail or explanation as to your thought processes here.

What I imagine when I think of a card layout, I think of something like this.

Spellcard Test Bed Cardpile_zps15c9dc7e

You get the general idea with that image, I hope.

How the cards interact is up to the imagination of the spell creator, providing mechanics that can be fun to play with while leaving imagination without too much restraint.

That above formation for example, creates a flaming blade that deals class three damage and delivers second stage burns leaving the target on fire for two posts.

Spellcard Test Bed Empty
PostSubject: Re: Spellcard Test Bed   Spellcard Test Bed EmptyMon Feb 04, 2013 10:43 pm

Two main things: A) This was supposed to be for working out the idea of special spell layouts that modify the effects of the spell itself - loosely based on different tarot spreads. B) Most of the actual data was arbitrarily thrown in for a joke about mad scientists and death rays, with magic instead of technology.

The color-coding was just to separate bonuses and penalties.

As for the second part: Hypothetical not-quite-standard personal cards, picked solely for the joke (Engineering and Lunacy). Anyway, I didn't know there was no spell cooldown... but without one, wouldn't people be tempted to spam their strongest spells? Backlash was a specific penalty for the spread that makes the spell randomly backfire.

Trigger was an additional Component, along with/instead of words and gestures.

Not so much detail, I know, but the idea was that finding certain loot items in the world (or getting them as quest rewards) can provide unique spreads and/or more usable cards, and that spreads with bonuses could be upgraded with extra card slots (and certain versions with more cards might have character level restrictions).

The actual joke spread in the first post was intended to have properties that turn the output into one thing specifically: A bloody big Death Ray.

Granted, it probably would have been a lot clearer without having been written as a parody application.
